The ballast tanks of a vessel were experiencing corrosion due to an inadequate existing coating. To protect the tanks and extend their lifespan, it was necessary to apply a more durable coating that could withstand the harsh marine environment and prevent further degradation.

The primary challenge was to effectively remove the old, failing coating and apply a new protective layer that would provide long-term resistance to corrosion. The solution needed to be applied efficiently, even in areas with restricted access, to ensure comprehensive protection.

UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a comprehensive protective coating solution using UPS 405 EPC. The application process involved the following steps:

Surface Preparation

- Where possible, the tank surfaces were abrasive grit blasted to achieve a surface cleanliness level of Sa 2.5 with a 75-micron profile, in accordance with ISO 8501/4 Standard Sa2.5 (SSPC SP10/NACE2).

- In areas with restricted access, the substrate was prepared using mechanical hand grinders to ISO 8501/4 ST3 (SSPC SP3 ST3) standards. This preparation ensured that the new coating would adhere effectively to the surfaces.

Stripe Coating

- Angles and edges were stripe coated with a single coat of UPS 405 EPC to provide additional protection to these vulnerable areas.

Application of UPS 405 EPC EPOXY PROTECTIVE COATING

- The entire surface of the ballast tanks was then coated with two applications of UPS 405 EPC, each applied at a nominal thickness of 250 microns. The coating was applied using both brush and roller techniques to ensure even coverage and durability.

The application of UPS 405 EPC successfully protected the ballast tanks from further corrosion. The new coating provided a robust and durable barrier, significantly extending the life span of the tanks and ensuring their continued functionality in a harsh marine environment.
