In a critical application involving a fire water pipe, flange fittings required a repair solution that could not only seal the connection but also accommodate potential expansion movements due to operational conditions. Additionally, the solution needed to offer protection against corrosion to extend the lifespan of the fittings.

The challenge was to apply a repair material that was flexible enough to handle the expansion movement of the flange fittings while curing quickly to minimize downtime. The solution also needed to provide a durable seal to prevent leaks and protect against corrosion.

UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a tailored repair solution using UPS 365 RR. The application process involved the following steps:

Surface Preparation

- Both mating flange faces were abraded using handheld grinders to remove any contaminants and to create a rough surface profile that would ensure optimal adhesion of the repair material.

Priming

- The abraded surfaces were then primed with UPS 366 P PRIMER, which was allowed to dry for one hour. This step was crucial to ensure a strong bond between the flange surfaces and the repair material.

Application of UPS 365 RR RUBBER REPAIR 60

- Both flange faces were coated with 1-2mm of UPS 365 RR. The flanges were then connected together, and the material was allowed to cure before the pipe was put back into service.

The application of UPS 365 RR successfully sealed the flange fittings, accommodating any expansion movement while providing robust protection against corrosion. The fast-curing nature of the material allowed for a quick return to service, minimising downtime and ensuring the reliability of the fire water system.
