At a processing plant, the aggregate chute, which guides the flow of solid particles, was experiencing significant wear and damage to its concrete walls. The constant abrasive effect of the materials being processed was causing the chute to degrade, necessitating a protective solution to prevent further damage and prolong its operational life.

The challenge was to effectively prepare the damaged concrete surface and apply a protective coating that would withstand the abrasive forces within the chute. The solution needed to be applied in a way that ensured complete coverage and long-term durability.

UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a comprehensive protection solution using UPS 405 EPC-AG. The application process involved the following steps:

Surface Preparation

- Scaffolding was erected to allow access to the chute. The existing cement lining was high-pressure washed to remove any loose material and contaminants.

- The surface was then abraded using handheld mechanical tools to create a rough profile for better adhesion of the coating.

Priming with UPS905 DP DAMP PRIMER

- A coat of UPS 905 DP was applied by brush and roller at a thickness of 150 microns (wet film thickness). This primer ensured proper adhesion of the protective coating, even in damp conditions.

Application of UPS405 EPC-AG EPOXY PROTECTIVE COATING – ABRASION GRADE

- Once the primer was cured, the surface was over-coated with two applications of UPS 405 EPC-AG. Each coat was applied at a thickness of 400 microns (wet film thickness) using brush and roller techniques, providing a robust barrier against abrasion.

The application of UPS 405 EPC-AG successfully protected the aggregate chute from further wear and damage. The durable coating provided a strong barrier against the abrasive forces within the chute, extending its service life and maintaining its structural integrity.
