UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS is dedicated to providing advanced repair solutions that enhance the lifespan and efficiency of critical equipment. This case study details the successful renovation of an aged pump housing at a water plant in Ecuador using our UPS 205 FG FLUID GRADE CERAMIC and UPS 105 EG THISTLEBOND METAL REPAIR PASTE.

As part of the annual maintenance plan at a nuclear power plant, the secondary filter required an abrasion protection application on its internal surfaces. The plant needed to ensure that the filter remained in optimal condition to prevent wear and tear that could compromise its performance.

The primary challenge was to effectively repair and protect the welding seams and internal surfaces of the filter, ensuring they could withstand the harsh operational environment. The solution had to provide durable, long-lasting protection against abrasion.

UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a comprehensive solution using our UPS 200 EG and UPS 205 FG. The process included the following steps:

Surface Preparation

- The internal surface of the filter was prepared by abrasive blasting to ISO 8501/4 SA2.5(SSPC SP10 / NACE 2) with a minimum angular blast profile of 75 microns. This preparation ensured the surfaces were clean and adequately roughened for optimal adhesion of the repair materials.

- The blasted surfaces were then cleaned and degreased using UPS 9918 MEK CLEANER to remove any contaminants before the repair process.

Application of UPS 200 EG CERAMIC REPAIR PASTE

- UPS 200 EG was applied to rebuild the welding seams, restoring the structural integrity of these critical areas.

Application of UPS 205 FG FLUID GRADE CERAMIC

- The entire internal surface of the filter was coated with two layers of UPS 205 FG. The first coat, applied at 350 microns, was in blue, followed by a second coat in grey, also at 350 microns. This dual coating system provided a robust and visible protective layer, ensuring comprehensive coverage and long-term abrasion resistance.

The application of UPS 200 EG and UPS 205 FG successfully protected the secondary filter's internal surfaces from abrasion. The filter was restored to its optimal condition, ready to continue operating efficiently and reliably within the nuclear power plant.

This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS' products in maintaining and protecting critical equipment in demanding environments like nuclear power plants. Our thorough repair and protection process ensured that the secondary filter will continue to perform effectively, reducing the risk of wear and tear over time.
