UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS offers advanced protective solutions for critical industrial equipment. This case study details the successful protection and repair of a secondary filter at a nuclear power plant using UPS 200 EG CERAMIC REPAIR PASTE and UPS 205 FG FLUID GRADE CERAMIC.
At a nuclear power plant, the secondary filter was scheduled for maintenance due to concerns about abrasion damage to its internal surfaces and welding seams. The filter base, which is critical to the plant’s operation, required protection to prevent further wear and ensure continued reliable performance.
The challenge was to repair the worn welding seams and apply a durable protective coating that would withstand the abrasive conditions within the filter. The solution needed to be robust and capable of extending the filter’s service life while maintaining its operational integrity.
UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a thorough repair and protection solution using UPS 200 EG and UPS 205 FG. The application process involved the following steps:
Surface Preparation
- The internal surface of the filter was abrasive blast cleaned to ISO 8501/4 SA2.5 (SSPC SP10/ NACE 2) standards, achieving a minimum angular blast profile of 75 microns. This preparation ensured that the repair and coating materials would adhere effectively.
Repair with UPS 200EG CERAMIC REPAIR PASTE
- The welding seams were rebuilt using UPS 200 EG. This material provided a strong and durable repair, restoring the integrity of the seams and preparing the surface for the protective coating.
Application of UPS 205 FG FLUID GRADE CERAMIC
- After cleaning and degreasing the blasted surfaces with UPS 9918 MEK CLEANER, two coats of UPS 205 FG were applied to the internal surface of the filter. The first coat was applied in blue, followed by a second coat in grey, each at a thickness of 350microns (wet film thickness). This dual-coat system provided robust protection against abrasion, ensuring long-term durability.
The application of UPS 200 EG Ceramic Repair Paste and UPS 205 FG Fluid Grade Ceramic successfully protected the secondary filter from further abrasion damage. The comprehensive repair and coating process extended the filter’s service life and maintained its operational efficiency, ensuring it could continue to perform its critical role in the nuclear power plant.
This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of Unique Polymer Systems' protective coatings and repair solutions in maintaining the integrity of critical industrial equipment. Our advanced materials and precise application process provided a reliable solution that safeguarded the secondary filter against future wear and tear.
