A new concrete pit was constructed to contain sulphuric acid at an industrial site. Given the highly corrosive nature of sulphuric acid, it was essential to apply a protective coating to the pit to prevent chemical attack and ensure the long-term durability of the concrete structure.

The challenge was to apply a protective coating that would adhere effectively to the new concrete and provide a long-lasting barrier against the corrosive effects of sulphuric acid. The solution needed to be durable and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions within the containment pit.

UNIQUE POLYMER SYSTEMS provided a comprehensive protection solution using UPS 909 PP and UPS 407 EN. The application process involved the following steps:

Surface Preparation

- The new concrete was allowed to cure for 21 days, ensuring that the moisture content was below8%.

- Surface laitance was removed using mechanical hand tools to create a clean and rough surface profile for the primer.

Priming with UPS 909 PP POROUS PRIMER

- The prepared concrete surface was primed with UPS 909 PP, applied at a thickness of 150 microns wet film thickness. This primer ensured proper adhesion of the subsequent protective coating. 

Application of UPS 407 EN EPOXY NOVOLAC

- All corners and edges were stripe coated with 450 microns of UPS 407 EN for added protection.

- The entire pit was then coated with two layers of UPS 407 EN, applied by brush, roller, and squeegee at a thickness of 450 microns per coat. This dual-coat system provided a robust barrier against sulphuric acid, ensuring long-term protection.

The application of UPS 909 PP and UPS 407 EN successfully protected the sulphuric acid containment pit. After 18 months of inspection, the coating showed no signs of deterioration, confirming its effectiveness in safeguarding the concrete structure from chemical attack.
