At Unique Polymer Systems, we offer specialized repair and protective solutions to enhance the longevity and performance of critical industrial equipment. This case study highlights the successful repair and coating of Main Cold Water (CCW) centrifugal pumps at a large power plant in Pakistan.

The CCW centrifugal pumps play a crucial role in maintaining the operational efficiency of the power station. These pumps supply seawater to condensers, which is vital for cooling the natural gas compressor gas turbines. Due to their continuous exposure to seawater, the pumps were at risk of erosion and corrosion, threatening their reliability and the overall stability of the power station.

The key challenge was to protect these strategically important pumps from ongoing erosion and corrosion. Any failure in these pumps could lead to significant operational disruptions and costly downtime.

Unique Polymer Systems provided a comprehensive solution to repair and protect the CCW centrifugal pumps.

The process involved the following steps:

  1. Surface Preparation: All pump parts were thoroughly grit blasted to remove any existing contaminants and to prepare the surface for the application of repair materials and coatings.

Rebuilding Process:

  1. UPS 105 EG THISTLEBOND METAL REPAIR PASTE and UPS 200 EG CERAMIC REPAIR PASTE were applied to rebuild the pump parts. This step restored the integrity of the components, filling any voids or damaged areas.
  2. The rebuilt surfaces were then machined down to their original dimensions, ensuring the pumps would operate at optimal performance levels.

 Protective Topcoat:

  1. To safeguard the pumps against future erosion and corrosion, UPS 205 FG FLUID GRADE CERAMIC and UPS 210 CR EFFICIENCY FLUID CERAMIC coatings were applied. These coatings are specifically designed to resist the harsh effects of seawater, providing long-lasting protection and enhancing the durability of the pumps.

The repair and protective coating process successfully restored the CCW centrifugal pumps to their original condition, ensuring they could continue to perform their critical role without the risk of erosion or corrosion. This solution not only extended the lifespan of the pumps but also minimized the potential for future operational disruptions at the power station.

This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of UniquePolymer Systems' repair and protective coating solutions in maintaining there liability and performance of essential industrial equipment. Our comprehensive approach ensured that the CCW centrifugal pumps at K-Electric Bin Qasim Power Station II were protected against the demanding conditions of their service environment.
