Several large-diameter pipe bends within a nuclear power plant were identified as needing internal protection to prevent abrasion and wear. Surface Preparation
- The internal surfaces of the pipe bends were prepared using mechanical abrasion with a handheld grinder, achieving a surface cleanliness level of ISO 8501/4 ST3 (SSPCSP3 ST3). This step was essential for ensuring proper adhesion of the repair and coating materials.
Repair with UPS 200 EG CERAMIC REPAIR PASTE
- The welding seams were repaired and rebuilt using UPS 200 EG. This material provided a durable and smooth surface, ready for the application of the protective coating.
Application of UPS405 EPC-AG EPOXY PROTECTIVE COATING – ABRASION GRADE
- After cleaning and degreasing the abraded surfaces with UPS 9918 MEK CLEANER, two coats of UPS 405 EPC-AG were applied to the entire internal surface of the pipe bends. Each coat was applied at a thickness of 400 microns, providing robust protection against abrasion and wear.
The application of UPS 200 EG and UPS 405 EPC-AG successfully protected the pipe bends from further abrasion and wear. The comprehensive repair and coating process ensured the long-term durability of the pipework, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the nuclear power plant.
